The proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project, an 11,200-megawatt (MW) scheme on the Siang River in Arunachal Pradesh, is facing resistance from local communities over displacement, livelihoods and cultural heritage. The State Government sees the project as vital to counter China's planned upstream dam and to bolster national security. Members of the indigenous Adi community and people living along the riverbank fear losing ancestral land, means of living and heritage. The Siang belongs to the Brahmaputra system; in Tibet the Brahmaputra is called the Yarlung Tsangpo.
