National Forest Martyrs Day, observed on September 11, honours forest personnel who died protecting forests and wildlife. It recalls the 1730 Khejarli sacrifice in Rajasthan, when the Bishnoi community, led by Amrita Devi Bishnoi, resisted the felling of Khejri trees and more than 360 people lost their lives. The episode is a landmark of community-led nature conservation. The 2026 theme is “Remembering Martyrs, Protecting Forests.”
