Two more Indian wetlands — Chandigarh's Sukhna Wetland and Uttar Pradesh's Sauj Jheel — have been designated Ramsar sites, raising the country's count to 103. Sukhna lies at the foothills of the Outer Himalayas, while Sauj Jheel is in Mainpuri district within the Ganga floodplain. Ramsar sites are wetlands of international importance that help conserve biodiversity, secure water, control floods, regulate climate and sustain local livelihoods. The Ramsar Convention was adopted in 1971 at Ramsar, Iran, and took effect in 1975. India became a party to it on 1 February 1982.
