Scientists at the Marine Biology Regional Centre of the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI), Chennai, have identified two marine fish species new to science, a sandperch and an electric ray. The sandperch lives on the seabed over sand or rubble in shallow waters and eats crustaceans, polychaetes and young fish. The electric ray was recorded from deeper parts of the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, with four specimens collected. Specimens came from waters off Chennai, Digha, Visakhapatnam and Kakinada at depths of 30–80 metres. The finding indicates that bottom-dwelling (demersal) fish diversity on India's eastern continental shelf remains poorly explored. So far, 17 sandperch species have been reported from Indian waters.
