The law reserving seats for women has taken effect in the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Puducherry from 17 April 2026, following a gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
- Parent law: The Constitution (106th Amendment) Act, 2023 reserves one-third of seats for women in the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies.
- UTs: Separate amendment laws passed in 2023 extended similar provisions to J&K and Puducherry.
- When seats get reserved: The quota will actually operate only after delimitation carried out on the basis of Census 2027.
