Womenโ€™s Quota Law Implemented in J&K and Puducherry from April 2026

106th Constitutional Amendment: Reserving 1/3 Seats in Union Territories

The Women's Reservation Law, derived from the Constitution (106th Amendment) Act, 2023, officially came into effect in the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Puducherry on April 17, 2026. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) issued the final gazette notification for its implementation.

Implementation Timeline

  • Quota: 33.3% (1/3) reservation for women in the Legislative Assemblies of both UTs.

  • Prerequisite: The reservation will be physically implemented in elections conducted after the delimitation process based on the upcoming Census 2027.

  • Impact: This ensures gender-inclusive legislative representation in two of India's most significant Union Territories.

For TNPSC aspirants, this is a milestone in 'Women Empowerment' and 'Governance in Union Territories.'
