Palaeontologist Varsha Ashok Aglawe has taken charge as the 54th Director General of the Geological Survey of India (GSI), succeeding Asit Saha.
She is the first woman to head the GSI in its 176-year history. The GSI, under the Ministry of Mines, is India's principal agency for geological mapping and mineral exploration.
