Varkala Selected Under Global '20 Cities Towards Zero Waste' Initiative
Varkala: India’s Entry into the Global Zero Waste Vanguard
In celebration of the International Day of Zero Waste (March 30, 2026), Varkala in Kerala has been named as one of the inaugural members of the “20 Cities Towards Zero Waste” initiative. This global project is facilitated by the UN Secretary-General’s Advisory Board on Zero Waste, with support from UN-Habitat and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).
Why Varkala was Selected
The selection recognizes Varkala's innovative approach to urban sustainability and its commitment to reducing waste generation through localized solutions:
- Sustainable Tourism: Managing waste in a high-traffic coastal destination through effective source segregation.
- Circular Economy: Implementing models that focus on recycling and reuse, effectively reducing the pressure on landfills.
- Community Engagement: Strong participation from local self-governance bodies and residents in sanitation and organic waste management.
The Global Network
Varkala joins a prestigious list including cities like San Francisco (USA), Yokohama (Japan), and Hangzhou (China). The initiative aims to share best practices and accelerate the transition toward a circular economy globally. For TNPSC and Environmental aspirants, this is a key update for "Urban Sustainability" and "Environmental Conservation," showcasing India's local leadership in global waste management standards.
