TN CM Vijay Launches 'Singappen' Special Task Force for Enhanced Womenโs Safety
Empowering the Lioness: Tamil Nadu Unveils Elite Women's Safety Wing
In a landmark executive move signaling a zero-tolerance policy toward crimes against women, the Tamil Nadu Government has officially notified the formation of the 'Singappen' (Lioness) Special Task Force. Launched in May 2026 as one of the first major decisions by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, this elite police wing is designed to provide proactive protection and preventive security for women across the state.
Direct Oversight and Command Structure
To ensure maximum accountability and rapid action, the Singappen Special Task Force functions under the direct supervision of the Chief Minister. The first phase of this initiative has received administrative sanction for 36 dedicated posts, led by an Inspector General of Police (IGP).
- Commanding Officers: One IGP (Newly created post), one Superintendent of Police (SP), and two Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs).
- Operational Force: Four Inspectors, eight Sub-Inspectors, and 20 personnel from other ranks.
- Deployment Strategy: Personnel are predominantly filled via redeployment from existing elite units to ensure immediate operational readiness.
Mission: Visible Policing and Preventive Surveillance
The primary and singular goal of the Singappen Force is prevention and protection. The task force is mandated to identify vulnerable and crime-prone 'hotspots' and conduct visible policing to instill a sense of security among women while deterring offenders.
Key Focus Zones:
- Transport Hubs: Railway stations and major bus stands.
- Educational Corridors: Schools, colleges, and university campuses.
- Public Spaces: Parks, IT corridors, and other high-traffic areas frequented by women.
- Inter-agency Coordination: The unit will work closely with the Social Welfare and Education departments, alongside NGOs, for rescue operations and awareness initiatives.
