The Union Cabinet has extended the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) until December 2028, with a sharper focus on rural drinking water supply. Under the upgraded JJM 2.0, the total financial outlay has been raised to ₹8.69 lakh crore. The mission aims to give functional tap water connections to all 19.36 crore rural households in India by 2028; about 15.80 crore households, or 81.61%, are already connected. A national digital system named Sujalam Bharat will map and monitor water supply systems all the way from the source to household taps.
