UNESCO Global Education Monitoring Report 2026: Countdown to 2030
Access and Equity: The First Global 'Countdown to 2030' Series
UNESCO has released the Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Report 2026, titled “Access and Equity: Countdown to 2030.” This is the first of a three-part series aimed at tracking the world’s progress toward Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4)—inclusive and equitable quality education—before the 2030 deadline.
Global Crisis: 273 Million Children Out of School
The report presents a sobering reality of the global education landscape:
- Out-of-School Children: Approximately 273 million children, adolescents, and youth remain out of school globally, showing a failure in policy despite a 30% increase in overall enrollment since 2000.
- The 2105 Projection: At the current pace of improvement, the global community will only achieve a 95% education completion rate by the year 2105, which is 75 years behind the 2030 target.
- Inequality Gaps: Significant disparities remain based on location, wealth, and gender, especially in rural and conflict-affected regions like West Asia.
Success and Challenges
While pre-primary education has seen a 45% growth, the gap between enrollment and completion remains a major hurdle. For TNPSC and Civil Services aspirants, this report is essential for the "Social Issues - Education" module, highlighting the critical structural reforms needed to achieve universal literacy and equity.
