The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has published the 'Safe Disposal of Unused Medicines' report, warning of the environmental and health risks of improper disposal. Using a One Health approach that links human, animal and environmental health, it notes that careless disposal fuels Antimicrobial Resistance, ecosystem toxicity and endocrine disruption. About 50% of medicines end up as waste worldwide, and unused medicines make up roughly 3% of hazardous healthcare waste. Since wastewater plants often fail to remove drug residues fully, it recommends high-temperature incineration, waste immobilisation, engineered landfills and co-processing.
