Telangana Declares Cancer as a Notifiable Disease to Strengthen Surveillance

Public Health Mandate: Mandatory Reporting for Cancer Cases

The Telangana government issued a landmark Government Order (GO) on April 7, 2026, officially declaring Cancer as a Notifiable Disease. This strategic move aims to create a centralized, robust surveillance system to estimate the true magnitude of the disease burden in the state.

The Reporting Mechanism

  • Mandatory Reporting: All government, private, and cooperative hospitals, including AYUSH centres and diagnostic labs, must report every diagnosed cancer case and related deaths within one month.

  • Centralized Portal: Data will be submitted through a state online portal to ensure a uniform Cancer Registry.

  • Validation Hub: The MNJ Institute of Oncology in Hyderabad will function as the Centre of Excellence (CoE), responsible for the scrutiny and validation of the data before it is sent to the National Cancer Registry (ICMR).

Healthcare Impact

This policy facilitates early detection, effective resource allocation, and targeted cancer screening strategies. For Pharmacy (D.Pharm) and Healthcare students, this update illustrates the intersection of epidemiology and public health policy. It is a key topic for TNPSC under "Public Health and Disease Management."
