The Tamil Nadu government has ordered a rainwater harvesting (RWH) campaign across the State to conserve water and recharge groundwater. Existing RWH structures will be revived, and fresh facilities will be set up in houses, apartments, institutions, commercial buildings and industries. Damaged systems will be repaired, while check dams and soak pits will be built close to points where water is drawn. Tamil Nadu made RWH a State policy back in 2002, requiring buildings to have harvesting structures. Of the State's 1,202 firkas (revenue subdivisions), groundwater levels were assessed as comfortable in 476.
