Tamil Nadu Assembly Election Results 2026: TVK Emerges as Single Largest Party in Hung Assembly
Historic Shift in Tamil Nadu Politics: TVK Ends the Dravidian Duopoly
The results of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections, declared on May 5, 2026, have delivered a historic and fractured mandate. For the first time in over five decades, a non-Dravidian major has emerged as the single largest party, leading to a Hung Assembly in the 234-member house.
Party-wise Performance:
- Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK): Led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, the party made a stunning debut by winning 108 seats, just 10 short of the 118-majority mark.
- DMK Alliance: The incumbent DMK-led alliance secured 73 seats. The DMK party itself won 59 seats, a significant drop from its 2021 performance.
- AIADMK Alliance: The AIADMK-led front managed 53 seats, with the AIADMK party winning 47.
- Others: Small gains were made by Congress (5), PMK (4), and other regional allies.
Major Upsets and Outcomes:
- Stalinβs Resignation: Following the defeat, outgoing Chief Minister M.K. Stalin submitted his resignation to Governor R.N. Ravi.
- Kolathur Shock: In the biggest upset of the election, M.K. Stalin was defeated in his stronghold of Kolathur by TVK candidate V.S. Babu by a margin of 8,795 votes.
- EPS Retention: Former CM and AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami retained his Edappadi seat for the eighth time.
Government Formation:
With no party reaching the absolute majority, the state is poised for its first-ever coalition government. TVK has reportedly initiated talks with the Congress and other smaller parties to bridge the 10-seat gap and form a stable administration.
