Tamil Nadu Records Historic 85.15% Voter Turnout in 2026 Assembly Elections
Historic High: Tamil Nadu Achieves 85.15% Voter Turnout in 2026
The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections have set a new benchmark in India’s electoral history. According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), the state recorded an all-time high voter turnout of 85.15%, reflecting a deeply engaged electorate and a robust democratic process.
The Impact of Special Intensive Revision (SIR)
While the turnout reached record heights, the underlying data reveals a unique trend. This surge is largely attributed to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls conducted prior to the elections. This exercise led to the net deletion of approximately 68 lakh ineligible electors, resulting in a leaner and more accurate voter list.
- Absolute Voter Increase: The state saw an increase of about 24.8 lakh absolute voters compared to 2021. This is lower than the growth seen in previous cycles (31.1 lakh between 2016–2021 and 64.8 lakh between 2011–2016).
- Percentage Rise: The increase in votes polled was roughly 5.5% over the 2021 elections, marking the lowest rise in the last 15 years (previously 6.22% in 2021, 18.5% in 2016, and 11.4% in 2011).
Women Lead the Charge
A significant highlight of this election was the participation of female voters. Women’s turnout stood at 85.76%, outperforming men, who recorded a turnout of 83.57%. In absolute numbers, approximately 2.51 crore women (out of 2.93 crore) cast their votes, compared to 2.34 crore men (out of 2.8 crore).
Regional Highlights
- Topping the List: The Karur and Veerapandi constituencies emerged as the leaders in voter participation, both recording a massive 93.40% polling.
- Smooth Operations: Despite the high volume of voters across 75,064 polling stations, the ECI recommended no repolls, indicating a remarkably orderly election process.
