The Supreme Court reaffirmed that the Hindu Succession Act, 1956, does not apply to Scheduled Tribes unless Parliament passes a law extending it to them. The ruling came in the Nawang vs Bahadur case (October 2025). The Court set aside a Himachal Pradesh High Court order that had granted inheritance rights to 'Hinduised' tribal women, holding that any change in tribal women's inheritance must come from Parliament and not the judiciary. Scheduled Tribes are recognised under Article 342 of the Constitution.
