The Supreme Court has allowed the withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment, including clinically assisted nutrition, for Harish Rana, a 32-year-old man in a vegetative state since 2013. It is the first court-approved implementation of passive euthanasia in India. The bench of Justices J.B. Pardiwala and K.V. Vishwanathan acted after Court-appointed medical boards found his condition irreversible, and directed AIIMS to provide dignified palliative end-of-life care. Passive euthanasia means withholding or withdrawing life support; active euthanasia remains illegal under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The right to die with dignity flows from Article 21, building on the Aruna Shanbaug and Common Cause rulings.
