Supreme Court Extends Mandatory Third-Party Insurance for New Vehicles by One Year

Save

The Supreme Court lengthened the compulsory third-party motor insurance cover on new vehicles by one year, to four years for cars and six years for two-wheelers. It noted that a "shocking" number of vehicles still run uninsured, leaving accident victims to "run from pillar to post" for compensation. The court suggested denying fuel at petrol pumps to uninsured vehicles and directed that Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras be linked with Insurance Information Bureau of India (IIB) data and the VAHAN registration portal. Its 2018 ruling in S. Rajaseekaran v. Union of India had mandated three-year cover for cars and five-year cover for two-wheelers.
