While hearing matters on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal, the Supreme Court ruled that Aadhaar cannot be accepted as proof of citizenship; it only establishes identity. Nearly 50 lakh voters are being verified in the exercise. The Court ordered judicial officers to be deployed to examine voter documents before the revised list is published, and used Article 142 of the Constitution to treat supplementary voter lists as part of the final roll. Aadhaar is governed by the Aadhaar Act, 2016.
