Judicial Innovation: Sikkim Leads the Digital Court Revolution
In May 2026, Sikkim achieved the historic distinction of becoming India’s first state with a fully paperless judiciary. The declaration was made by CJI Surya Kant during a high-level technology conclave in Gangtok, coinciding with Sikkim's 50 years of statehood.
Key Features of the Paperless System:
- e-Courts Integration: Implementation of digital case management (DCM) and mandatory e-filing for all court levels.
- Virtual Hearings: Robust video conferencing facilities and electronic summons via SMS and email through the NSTEP platform.
- Impact: Greatly improves accessibility to justice in the hilly terrain of Sikkim while reducing environmental footprint and administrative delays.
