Siachen Day, marked on April 13, commemorates Operation Meghdoot, launched by India in 1984 to secure the Siachen Glacier, known as the world's highest battlefield. The operation was undertaken to pre-empt Pakistan's attempts to occupy key heights in the region. Soldiers posted there endure temperatures below −50°C and treacherous high-altitude terrain. The day honours their courage, sacrifice and endurance in guarding the glacier.
