The 1,856 MW Sawalkote run-of-the-river hydroelectric project on the Chenab in Ramban district, Jammu and Kashmir, is being accelerated after India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty following the 2025 Pahalgam terror attack. Initiated in 1984 and later declared a project of national importance, it lies on the Chenab, a western river under the 1960 treaty signed between India and Pakistan with World Bank mediation.
