For the first time in the history of Indian cinema, a film in the Santhali language has won a National Film Award. The short film 'Angen (Invisible)' was honoured at the 72nd National Film Awards, and its director Ravi Raj Murmu received the award for Best Debut Film of a Director in the Non-Feature category. Santhali is a tribal language spoken mainly in Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha and neighbouring states, and it is one of the languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. The award gives wider recognition to tribal-language filmmaking.
