Samudra Sahas: A Historic Maritime Voyage by the Regiment of Artillery
To celebrate the 200th anniversary (Bicentenary) of the Regiment of Artillery, the Indian Army launched the 'Samudra Sahas' sailing expedition on April 13, 2026. This marks a significant milestone as the first-ever blue-water sailing venture undertaken by an Artillery unit of the Indian Army, showcasing the versatility and endurance of the personnel beyond traditional combat roles.
Expedition Route and Phases
The expedition was ceremonially flagged off from Marve, Mumbai, by Lieutenant General N. S. Sarna. Spanning approximately 520 nautical miles along the Konkan Coast, the voyage is structured into four strategic phases:
- Phase 1: Mumbai to Vijaydurg
- Phase 2: Vijaydurg to Goa
- Phase 3: Goa back to Vijaydurg
- Phase 4: Vijaydurg return to Mumbai
Honoring Maritime Legacy
The sailors utilized 21-foot Seabird class boats, navigating through dynamic maritime conditions and variable wind patterns. Beyond the technical challenge, the expedition serves as a prestigious tribute to the enduring maritime legacy of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, reflecting Indiaβs rich seafaring heritage and strategic foresight in naval defense.
Leadership and Training
The team is led by Captain Kshitij Nair and Subedar Prakash Funde. Prior to the launch, the crew underwent rigorous pre-expedition training at the Heavy Bridge Training Centre in Marve to master seamanship and coordination in open waters.
For TNPSC and competitive exam aspirants, this event is a key update under "National Defence" and "Significant Anniversaries," highlighting the Indian Army's commitment to adventure, leadership, and regional heritage.
