Tamil Nadu sanctions ₹180 crore five-year scheme to curb human-wildlife conflict

Tamil Nadu will invest ₹180 crore from 2026–27 to 2030–31 to reduce human-wildlife conflict in vulnerable areas. The scheme covers 100 conflict-prone villages in 11 Western Ghats districts such as Coimbatore, Erode, Nilgiris, Salem, Theni, Tirunelveli and Tiruppur. A sum of ₹20 crore is earmarked for 2026–27 and ₹40 crore a year for the next four years. Planned works cover elephant-proof trenches, hanging solar fences, steel wire-rope fencing, fodder development and water augmentation, along with GPS-enabled vehicles and night patrols. 95 Anti-Depredation Committees, village SMS early-warning systems, AI-based surveillance, radio-collaring and geo-referenced tracking will back community-led mitigation.
