On 28 October 2026, the Union Cabinet cleared the Container Manufacturing Promotion Scheme (CMPS) to boost container production at home. Announced in the Union Budget 2026–27, it carries a total outlay of ₹10,000 crore running up to FY 2039–40. The goals are lower import dependence, sturdier supply chains and making India a global hub for shipping containers. Of the outlay, ₹859 crore goes to a 3% interest subvention on qualifying loans, ₹8,891 crore to running costs of containers meeting standards and ₹150 crore to certification and testing. Annual domestic capacity is to rise nearly 10-fold to 7.5 lakh Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs).
