Reconstructed Veera Vasantharayar Mandapam at Madurai Meenakshi Temple inaugurated

Save
The reconstructed Veera Vasantharayar Mandapam at the Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai was formally opened on August 30, 2026. Built in 1611 CE by Muthu Veerappa Nayak, brother of King Thirumalai Nayak, it stands near the temple's eastern tower. Of its 136 pillars, 79 monoliths were carved afresh by about 150 sculptors led by sthapathi V.P. Velmurugan; each has an 18.6-foot shaft and rises to about 29 feet with its capital and lion motifs. A Nandi from the Early Pandya period faces the Sundareswarar shrine from a stone cistern inside.
