An early 8th-century CE inscription in Telugu has been found at Pitikayagulla in Andhra Pradesh. Written in early Telugu script, it shows the language emerging from Prakrit influence into an independent tongue. The record describes the building of a new embankment called 'nava katta', credited to Pranimilli Achari, thought to be a sculptor or craftsman. It is associated with the Renadu region, although the reigning king is not named.
