India's solar photovoltaic module manufacturing capacity has reached 100 GW, up from 2.3 GW in 2014, while cell capacity stood at 25 GW and wafer capacity about 2 GW by March 2025. Import dependence is still close to 100% for polysilicon, above 90% for wafers, above 60% for cells and above 40% for modules, mostly from China. Support comes through the PLI Scheme, which has awarded 48 GW of integrated capacity, the ALMM list and Basic Customs Duty. India had 106 GW of solar installed by March 2025 and must add about 174 GW to reach 280 GW by 2030. Exports rose eightfold to $1.2 billion in FY2025, 97% going to the US.
