Post-Poll Scrutiny Completed in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal: No Re-polls Ordered

Electoral Integrity: Post-Poll Scrutiny Finalized in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal

In a significant step toward finalizing the 2026 Assembly Election process, the Election Commission of India (ECI) successfully completed the post-poll scrutiny of documents for Tamil Nadu and West Bengal on April 24, 2026. Following a detailed verification, the commission announced that no re-polls were necessary in any of the constituencies covered.

The Scrutiny Process and Form 17A

The scrutiny primarily involves the cross-verification of Form 17A (the Register of Voters) with the voter slips and other statutory documents. Key highlights of the process include:

  • Scope in Tamil Nadu: Verification was conducted across all 234 Assembly constituencies, covering over 75,000 polling stations.

  • Scope in West Bengal: Covered 152 constituencies involved in the recent phase, verifying over 44,000 polling stations.

  • Transparency: The exercise was carried out in the presence of General Observers, candidates, and their authorized election agents to ensure total transparency.

Security of EVMs and VVPATs

Following the scrutiny, the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) units have been moved to high-security strongrooms. These units are being kept under 24/7 multi-tier surveillance (including CCTV and armed guards) until the day of counting. The scrutiny confirmed that the data in the machines matched the manual records kept by the presiding officers.

Significance for Aspirants

For TNPSC and Civil Services aspirants, this event is a practical case study under "Indian Polity β€” Elections." It highlights the procedural safeguards used by the ECI to maintain the sanctity of the ballot and the importance of administrative documentation (like Form 17A) in the world's largest democratic exercise.
