Hazaribag in Jharkhand has become India's first pearl farming cluster under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), the central scheme for developing fisheries and aquaculture. The district was officially notified as the Pearl Cluster on 30 August 2024, and the project has received ₹22 crore in investment from the Union and Jharkhand governments. The National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) has recorded the production of 1.02 lakh pearls from Hazaribag. The cluster cultivates pearls using Hyriopsis cumingii, a freshwater mussel species, offering a new livelihood for local farmers.
