The ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), Izatnagar, Bareilly (Uttar Pradesh), has produced Sahiwal calves through advanced reproductive technology. Scientists applied the OPU-IVF-ET (Ovum Pick-Up, In Vitro Fertilisation, Embryo Transfer) technique for the first time at the institute. Five healthy Sahiwal calves were born within five days in February 2026. The programme, begun in 2022-23, seeks to improve indigenous breeds such as Sahiwal, Tharparkar and Murrah buffalo.
