In February 2026 the Opposition moved a resolution to remove Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Under Article 94, at least 50 members must give written notice, with 14 days' notice before voting; the procedure follows Rule 200A of the Lok Sabha Rules of Procedure. The Speaker cannot rule on admissibility because the charge is against him and cannot preside during such a resolution. Though Article 93 mandates a Deputy Speaker, the post is vacant, so the panel of chairs presides. If passed by a majority of all the then members, the Speaker must vacate office.
