The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has been given the task of building a new Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) in Mangaluru, Karnataka.
Strategic petroleum reserves store crude oil that the country can draw upon during supply disruptions, price shocks or emergencies. As India imports most of the crude oil it uses, adding SPR capacity strengthens the nation's energy security and its ability to cope with global supply shocks.
