High-Tech Industrial Economics: Strategic Blueprint Targets 13% Global Market Capture via OSAT and Compound Semiconductor Corridors

In a major structural push to end foreign chip monopolies and build long-term electronic hardware sovereignty, NITI Aayog has officially released 'Future of India’s Semiconductor Industry', the country’s first comprehensive 10-year roadmap. The policy framework coordinates with MeitY and the Ministry of Finance to deploy aggressive funding models designed to transition the subcontinental market from an assembly-only grid into an absolute manufacturing powerhouse by 2035.

The $150 Billion Value Chain Goal and the Mature Logic Node Vector

The newly codified hardware blueprint implements key targets to lower import reliance and capitalize on the native design workforce:

  • The Massive 2035 Market Projections: The roadmap charts out concrete timelines to scale up domestic manufacturing, aiming to build a **$120–150 billion domestic semiconductor value chain by 2035**, while pushing the overall domestic chip consumption market to hit **$200 billion**.
  • Overcoming the Import Dependency Squeeze: India currently **imports an alarming 90–95% of its semiconductor requirements**, leaving local automotive and telecommunication foundries highly vulnerable to global trade shocks. The 2035 strategy targets capturing **10–13% of the global semiconductor market** to break this dependency loop.
  • OSAT and Compound Semiconductor Focus: Rather than chasing unprofitable sub-7nm logic arcs initially, the roadmap focuses on high-yield sectors: **Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) units, mature logic nodes, and specialized compound semiconductors** (Silicon Carbide and Gallium Nitride) required for electric vehicles (EVs) and green power grids.
  • Capitalizing on the Design Workforce: Highlighting India's premium human capital, the report notes that **India accounts for 20% of the global semiconductor design workforce**. The roadmap creates venture capital networks to help these engineers build domestic IP (Intellectual Property) blocks paperlessly.
