New TV Rating Policy 2026: Boosting Transparency and Competition in TRP Measurements

New Era of Transparency: Ministry Notifies New TV Rating Policy 2026

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has officially notified the New TV Rating Policy 2026. This policy is designed to overhaul the existing television audience measurement system, ensuring it is more transparent, accountable, and reliable for broadcasters and advertisers alike.

Key Reforms in the 2026 Policy

The new guidelines replace the decade-old 2014 rules and introduce several structural changes to foster healthy competition and data accuracy.

  • Reduced Barrier for Entry: The net worth requirement for rating agencies has been slashed from β‚Ή20 crore to β‚Ή5 crore. This is expected to allow more agencies to enter the sector, breaking monopolies and increasing competitive service.
  • Independent Board Oversight: To prevent bias, the policy mandates that at least 50% of the board members must be independent. These members must have no direct or indirect links to broadcasters or advertisers.
  • Expansion of Metered Homes: To capture a more representative slice of Indian viewership, the number of metered homes will be scaled up to 80,000 in the short term, with a final target of 1.2 lakh homes.

Data Safety and Audits

For the first time, a dual audit system (combining internal and external audits) has been introduced to verify the integrity of viewership data. Furthermore, all rating agencies must strictly comply with the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, 2023, ensuring that the privacy of metered households is fully protected.

Why It Matters

The New TV Rating Policy 2026 aims to restore trust in the TRP (Television Rating Point) system, which dictates the distribution of thousands of crores in advertising revenue. For TNPSC and competitive exam aspirants, this policy is a critical update in the field of national administrative reforms and media governance.
