The National Disaster Management Authority unveiled the country's first Standard Operating Procedure, 'Comprehensive Disaster Victim Identification and Management', on Republic Day 2026 for mass-fatality events. It draws lessons from 2025 disasters such as the Air India crash at Ahmedabad, the Sangareddy chemical factory blast, the Gambhira bridge collapse in Vadodara, the Dharali flash floods and the Delhi car bomb blast. The SOP lays down four stages: recovery of remains, post-mortem data, ante-mortem data from families, and reconciliation and release. It recommends a National Dental Data Registry and brings in forensic odontology and archaeology.
