The Union Health Ministry began the annual nationwide Mass Drug Administration campaign to wipe out Lymphatic Filariasis. Eligible people receive anti-filarial drugs – Diethylcarbamazine, Albendazole and Ivermectin. The drive covers 12 endemic States, among them Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Maharashtra and Karnataka. The disease, a neglected tropical disease caused by parasitic worms and transmitted by mosquitoes, can cause elephantiasis, hydrocele and lasting disability. India targets elimination by 2027, in line with SDG-3.
