National PNG Drive 2.0 Extended to June 2026: Accelerating Indiaโ€™s Clean Energy Shift

National PNG Drive 2.0 Extended: Paving the Way for a Gas-Based Economy

In a strategic move to sustain the momentum of clean energy adoption, the Government of India has extended the National PNG (Piped Natural Gas) Drive 2.0 until June 30, 2026. Originally launched by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) on January 1, 2026, the campaign’s extension aims to bridge the gap in last-mile connectivity for households and commercial sectors.

Key Objectives and Targets

The drive, themed “Har Ghar PNG, Har Gaadi CNG,” is a critical part of India's vision to increase the share of natural gas in its primary energy mix from the current levels to 15% by 2030. Its main goals include:

  • Broad Connectivity: Expanding PNG networks to 37 new Geographical Areas (GAs) and 44 districts currently lacking infrastructure.
  • Universal Reach: Increasing connections in residential households, hostels, community kitchens, messes, and canteens.
  • Institutional Support: Directing City Gas Distribution (CGD) entities to prioritize educational institutions and Anganwadi centers.

Progress and Statistics (as of March 2026)

The initiative has seen remarkable success in its initial phase. According to recent reports:

  • Connections Gasified: Over 3.1 lakh connections were successfully gasified in March 2026 alone.
  • New Registrations: More than 2.7 lakh new domestic and commercial connections were added during the same period.
  • Daily Logistics: While promoting PNG, the government is also ensuring stability in traditional fuels, delivering over 50 lakh domestic LPG cylinders daily.

Significance for Sustainable Development

By promoting Piped Natural Gas, the government aims to reduce the logistics and environmental burden associated with LPG cylinders. PNG is not only 20–30% cheaper than LPG per unit of heat but also provides a continuous, 24x7 supply, reducing dependence on traditional fuels and lowering urban pollution levels.

For TNPSC aspirants, this initiative is a key topic under Environment and Government Schemes, reflecting India's "Net Zero 2070" commitment and its transition toward more resilient energy architecture.
