NASAโ€™s Artemis II Sets New Space Distance Record for Human Travel

Artemis II: Breaking the Farthest Human Distance Record

NASA's Artemis II mission has officially set a new world record for the farthest distance traveled by humans in space. By reaching approximately 252,756 miles (406,771 km) from Earth, it surpassed the long-standing record of Apollo 13 set in 1970.

Mission Profile and Crew

  • Mission Goal: The first crewed lunar mission in over 50 years (since Apollo 17 in 1972).

  • Spacecraft: The crew is traveling aboard the Orion spacecraft, powered by the SLS rocket.

  • The Crew: Includes four astronauts, making history with the first woman and the first person of color to travel to the lunar vicinity, alongside an astronaut from the Canadian Space Agency (CSA).

Strategic Trajectory and Observations

The mission follows a free-return trajectory, utilizing the Moon's gravity to sling-shot the spacecraft back to Earth. During the flight, the crew observed the Moon's far side and recorded high-definition footage of a solar eclipse. Despite a temporary communication blackout during the far-side passage, the mission successfully tested Orion's life-support and deep-space communication systems.

For TNPSC and Science aspirants, this record is a milestone in the Artemis programme, paving the way for the Artemis III mission which will land humans near the lunar South Pole.
