Artemis II Moon Mission: NASA Prepares for First Crewed Lunar Flight in 50 Years

Artemis II: Pioneering the Return to Deep Space Exploration

NASA is entering the final stages of preparation for Artemis II, a historic mission that will see humans return to the vicinity of the Moon for the first time since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972. This mission serves as the critical 'crewed flight test' before humans land on the lunar surface during Artemis III.

The Rocket and Spacecraft

  • Space Launch System (SLS): The mission will be launched using the 32-storey tall SLS, the most powerful heavy-lift rocket ever built by NASA.

  • Orion Spacecraft: A crew of four astronauts will travel inside the Orion capsule, designed for long-duration deep-space travel.

Mission Profile

The approximately 10-day mission follows a specific trajectory:

  • Earth Orbit: Orion will first orbit Earth to test life-support and communication systems.

  • Lunar Flyby: The crew will perform a 'figure-eight' trajectory around the Moon without landing, reaching more than 7,400 km beyond the far side of the Moon.

  • Splashdown: The mission concludes with a precision high-speed reentry and splashdown in the Pacific Ocean.

Strategic Significance

Artemis II is the foundation for the Lunar Gateway and a sustainable human presence on the Moon. For TNPSC and Civil Services aspirants, this is a milestone in "Space Science," marking the transition from lunar exploration to establishing a platform for Mars missions.
