India has signed a joint statement with the United States and 13 other economies to confront structural excess capacity in key industries. Its focus is on five sectors: batteries, solar panels, chemicals, foundational semiconductors, and automobiles including electric vehicles (EVs). Members want to curb overproduction and non-market policies that distort world trade. Technical-level talks are planned before December 2026 to pool data and draw up a framework for joint action. The effort builds on discussions about industrial overcapacity held at the Group of Twenty (G20) in 2016.
