The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has released India's first guidance document on Diabetes Mellitus in children. It sets out a national framework for screening, diagnosis, treatment and long-term management for children from birth to 18 years. Public health facilities will provide free screening, insulin therapy, glucometers, test strips and follow-up care. The framework ensures a continuum of care from community-level screening to district hospitals and medical colleges. For early detection of Type 1 diabetes it uses the '4Ts' warning signs: Toilet, Thirsty, Tired and Thinner.
