Save

Saundala village in Maharashtra passed a Gram Sabha resolution on 5 February 2026 declaring itself caste-free. Adopting the motto 'Aamchi jaat... manav' (My caste is humanity), the village guarantees equal access for all residents to schools, temples, water bodies and cremation grounds. Discrimination on grounds of caste is prohibited under Article 15 of the Constitution. The resolution is seen as a grassroots example of promoting social equality through local self-government.
