The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is drafting a dedicated Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for polysilicon manufacturing. India has virtually no polysilicon capacity today and relies largely on imports, mostly from China. The proposed scheme seeks to back more than 10 GW of domestic production capacity. Polysilicon is the basic raw material for solar cells and is also vital to the semiconductor industry. The plan is meant to strengthen the upstream solar supply chain, cut import dependence and raise domestic value addition.
