Digital Disaster Response: Mizoram’s Innovative ‘Khuarel’ App
In May 2026, the Mizoram government launched the ‘Khuarel’ mobile app to strengthen real-time disaster reporting and response. Unveiled by Minister Lalnilawma in Aizawl, the app makes Mizoram one of the first Northeastern states to adopt such a comprehensive digital solution for disaster management.
App Features:
- Meaning: ‘Khuarel’ is a Mizo term meaning 'Nature'.
- Real-time Coordination: Enables instant communication between citizens, the DM&R Department, and disaster authorities (SDMA/DDMA).
- Offline Mode: Supports disaster reporting even without active internet, a critical feature for hilly and remote terrains.
- Resource Database: Provides locations of nearby relief camps, hospitals, and emergency contacts in both Mizo and English.
