New guidelines from the Ministry of Home Affairs set out the order in which the National Song and the National Anthem should be performed. Whenever the two are presented on the same occasion, Vande Mataram is to be sung or played before Jana Gana Mana. The official rendition of the National Song lasts roughly 3 minutes 10 seconds, and everyone present is expected to stand to attention while it is performed. Composed by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, Vande Mataram was given National Song status on 24 January 1950, when the Constituent Assembly adopted it.
