MHA Notifies Citizenship (Amendment) Rules 2026: Introduction of e-OCI
Modernizing OCI: The 2026 Digital Shift
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) notified the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2026, on April 30, 2026. The new framework transitions the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) process to a fully digital system to enhance transparency and security.
Major Rules Introduced:
- e-OCI: Introduction of electronic OCI records and digital OCI cards, eliminating physical paperwork for renewal and renunciation.
- Minor Passport Rule: Minor children are strictly prohibited from holding both Indian and foreign passports simultaneously, reinforcing India's single citizenship policy.
- Online Renunciation: Surrendering OCI status must now be done electronically through the central portal.
For Polity aspirants, this is a significant update under 'Citizenship' and 'Constitutional Provisions,' reflecting the administrative evolution of the 1955 Act.
