Maharashtra Day and Gujarat Foundation Day are both observed on May 1, marking the creation of the two States in 1960 when Bombay State was divided on a linguistic basis under the Bombay Reorganisation Act, 1960. Maharashtra was formed for Marathi speakers after a movement led by the Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti, a demand that grew stronger after 1947. Gujarat was formed for Gujarati speakers following the Mahagujarat Movement led by Indulal Yagnik. Gujarat's first capital was Ahmedabad, later shifted to Gandhinagar in 1970.
